At the ‘Metro CC – Horeca Center‘ commercial facility, waterproofing repairs were carried out at critical points on the facade and facade joinery.
Water intrusion was occurring through the external joinery due to wind-driven rain entering the junctions between the parapet and facade panels, the concrete and aluminum facade frames, and between the glass and aluminum window profiles — primarily due to worn-out rubber gaskets.

For this type of repair work, Sikalastic liquid waterproofing proved to be the most effective solution.

The existing parapet panel flashings, ceramic tiles, and decorative aluminum profiles were dismantled. Primers were applied according to the substrate material to prepare the surface for the Sikalastic 614 liquid membrane.

In this case, the following primers were used:

  • Metal Primer – for metal surfaces
  • Concrete Primer – for concrete
  • Sika Primer 3N – for glass and aluminum profile joints, to enable proper bonding of the Sikaflex 221 polyurethane sealant.

Before applying the sealant to the glass and aluminum joints, masking tape was applied to protect surfaces and ensure clean application lines.

Note: In this type of work, more time is typically spent on preparation than on applying the waterproofing membrane or sealant itself.

The gap between the concrete slab and joinery, exposed after removing the ceramic tiles, was filled with polyethylene foam backing rod (‘fugenprofil’).

After substrate preparation, Sikalastic 614 liquid membrane was applied in three layers with quartz sand broadcast. This was done at the junctions between:

  • Concrete and facade joinery
  • Parapets and facade panels (main entrance area)

The glass-to-aluminum profile joints were sealed using Sikaflex 221 polyurethane sealant in black.

Total waterproofed joint lengths:

  1. Concrete and facade joinery (Sikalastic 614):
        Width: 220 mm, Length: 15.7 m
  2. Parapet and facade panels (Sikalastic 614):
        Width: 220 mm, Length: 3.6 m
  3. Facade joinery sealed with polyurethane sealant Sikaflex 221:
        Length: 120 m
